According to the Centers for Disease Control, (CDC) there are an estimated 220,000+ cases of Clostridium difficile in hospitalized patients, and upwards of 13,000 deaths annually in the United States.
Clostridia infections are not just a problem in the US, but worldwide, and the problems of clostridia often extend beyond the digestive system. For example, clostridia infections from various species are now known to be associated with different patient populations such as mental health conditions and neurological disorders, and an astute health practitioner should view the potential relationship of clostridia toxins to these and other conditions.
This is the focus of the Clostridia Mastery Course.
“Clostridia bacterial infections can cause significant health problems from digestive system, musculoskeletal, and neurological disease, and death. Even though not all clostridia infections are lethal - most are not - they are often associated with various mental health and neurological problems. Every health professional needs to understand the negative effects of clostridia beyond just digestive system disease (and the rare cases of tetanus and botulism) and learn how to properly assess their existence and effective ways of eradication intervention.”
- Kurt Woeller, D.O., Health Education Director, Integrative Medicine Academy
Clostridia are a group of anaerobic bacteria that can inhabit the digestive system of humans. Many types of clostridia bacteria are non-pathogenic and even normal inhabitants of the intestinal tract, but certain species such as Clostridium difficile can be very problematic leading to serious illness and even death.
Well recognized clostridia bacteria are those that cause tetanus, botulism, and Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea and subsequent inflammatory bowel disease.
However, there are other strains of Clostridium difficile that can be problematic too and various chemicals produced by these bacteria that have toxic effects beyond those that trigger the intestinal problems often associated with typical C. difficile induced colitis. Some of these toxins such as HPHPA and 4-Cresol, can adversely affect the brain and nervous system.
This Clostridia Mastery Course explores the various aspects of specific clostridia bacterial infections as they relate to negative influences not only for digestive system disease, but neurological disorders too. The in-depth course module lectures detail the various toxins of clostridia bacteria and their mechanisms of pathogenicity. Explained in detail will be different laboratory testing for clostridia detection, and treatment intervention options.
Both 4-cresol and HPHPA are clostridia bacteria compounds produced within the digestive system but having systemic adverse effects within the nervous system. There chemical structure interacts with the enzyme dopamine beta-hydroxylase inhibiting its ability to convert dopamine into norepinephrine. This has many negative consequences seen in autism, mental health disorders, and neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
“The significance of clostridia bacterial problems in a certain subset of individuals cannot be over-stated. The digestive system disease from clostridia difficile is well-known. However, the problems seen in those with autism is less known, but important as well. The autism population appears to be highly vulnerable to the existence of various clostridia species within the digestive system producing toxic compounds which compromise neurologic and mitochondrial function. The presence of certain clostridia toxins such as 4-cresol and HPHPA often lead to aggressive and self-injurious behavior. Other problems can occur too, such as fatty acid metabolism and interference with metabolic cellular function.”
- Kurt Woeller, D.O., Health Education Director, Integrative Medicine Academy
Our Clostridia Mastery Course is designed for the health care practitioner who is looking to delve deeper into the science underlying clostridia difficile infections affecting digestive function, as well as those clostridia toxins evaluated through organic acids testing. This course is designed for any type of health professional with a focus on the functional and integrative health wanting to understand the role of clostridia, particularly in autism (and related disorders), digestive system, mental health, and neurological conditions. The role of comprehensive digestive stool analysis and organic acid test assessment will be greatly emphasized in this course.

#1
This module will explore the varied aspects of clostridia bacteria health and disease.
Module
#2
This module will explore various pathogenicity mechanisms of certain clostridia bacteria.
Module
#3
This module is a continuation of the pathogenicity mechanisms unique to clostridia bacteria.
Module
#4
Module
#5
This module details the multitude of treatment interventions for common clostridia problems.
Module
#6
“To fully grasp the significance of the clostridia in health and disease, a health practitioner needs to be well-versed in its life cycle, existence within the digestive system, and various pathogenicity mechanisms. Once this is achieved, in addition to understanding the various environmental factors that influence its proliferation such as specific environmental chemicals affecting the microbiome, competition with gastrointestinal candida, and immune system reactivity, a functional and integrative health practitioner can then confidently and competently design helpful healing strategies for their patient and clients.”

His private practice, Sunrise Functional Medicine, focuses on specialized diagnostic testing and treatments for individuals with complex medical conditions like autism, autoimmune and neurological disorders, and other chronic health conditions.
"The real bonus is the practice development aspect, the intake forms, the questionnaires, and all the handouts are so important and so useful. No other training program offers that. The other program I am enrolled in doesn’t do ANYTHING to support clinical practice development nor does it have an online forum for us to ask questions or interact. We are getting such an amazing training here, and Dr. Woeller is giving us far more than expected."
- Dr. Michael J.
"I can absolutely say that i learned more in this course than i have than in most other programs I have attended. You made it so simple to create protocols that i can implement in my office."
- Dr. Bruce F.
"These are highly professional and principled scholars who will inspire you to become the best functional medicine practitioner of which you are capable. The entire staff of Integrative Medicine Academy reflects this excellence and integrity and I am truly blessed to have learned of the Academy."
